Severe Osteoarthritis: Supporting Your Pet Through Chronic Joint Pain

What is Severe Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is a chronic, progressive condition where the cartilage in the joints gradually deteriorates, leading to pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility. It is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in dogs and cats, particularly as they age. While not curable, OA can be managed, but in severe cases, it can significantly impact a pet’s quality of life, making even simple movements excruciating [1, 2].

In healthy joints, cartilage provides a smooth, low-friction surface for bones to glide over. In OA, this cartilage deteriorates, leading to bone-on-bone friction, inflammation, and the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes). This process results in pain, stiffness, and a decreased range of motion. Symptoms often develop gradually and can include lameness or limping, difficulty rising after rest, reluctance to jump or use stairs, decreased activity levels, stiffness, and changes in behavior due to pain, such as irritability or withdrawal. In cats, signs can be more subtle, often manifesting as a decreased desire to jump, reduced grooming, or changes in litter box habits [1, 3, 4].
