Lymphoma: Navigating This Common Cancer in Your Beloved Pet

What is Lymphoma?

Lymphoma is a common and serious cancer that affects the lymphatic system, a vital part of the immune system responsible for fighting off infections and diseases. This system includes lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, and other lymphoid tissues throughout the body. When lymphoma develops, it involves the uncontrolled growth of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Lymphoma can manifest in various forms and locations, making its presentation diverse in both dogs and cats [1, 2].

In dogs, lymphoma is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers. It often presents as enlarged, non-painful lymph nodes, particularly those under the jaw, in front of the shoulders, or behind the knees. Other forms can affect internal organs, leading to symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased thirst or urination. The specific symptoms depend on which organs are affected [1, 3].

In cats, lymphoma is also a significant concern, with gastrointestinal lymphoma being a common form. Symptoms can include chronic vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, decreased appetite, and a palpable abdominal mass. Other forms can affect the mediastinum (chest cavity), kidneys, or nasal cavity, leading to respiratory issues, kidney failure signs, or nasal discharge and sneezing, respectively [2, 4].

How Veterinarians Manage Lymphoma

The diagnosis of lymphoma typically involves a physical examination, blood tests, and often a fine needle aspirate or biopsy of affected lymph nodes or organs. Further staging tests, such as X-rays, ultrasound, and bone marrow aspirates, are crucial to determine the extent of the disease and guide treatment decisions.
